This communication technology fair is designed for teachers, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, special educators, and most importantly, users of the technologies and their families. Kurzweil Educational Systems presents Kurzweil 3000
Kurzweil Educational Systems and Cape Cod Speech and Language will host Nancy Avery in a presentation and reception to be held at Ocean Edge Resort Clubhouse in Brewster. Kurzweil 3000 software will be demonstrated, and participants can earn Massachusetts Professional Development Points (PDP's). Although it has many functions, Kurzweil 3000 is very powerful reading software that allows any text (book, workbook, webpage, handout, etc.) to be read aloud to a student. Massachusetts has recently approved an Kurzweil version of the MCAS as an accommodation for students who are regular users of the software. Directions from Hyannis: Take Route 6 Eastbound. Jean Hightower, the Regional Representative for Health Science, a company specializing in speech generating devices and assistive technology, will visit Cape Cod Speech and Language on Wednesday, January 14th from 4-6 PM. Presentation by Mae Timmons, Speech Language Pathologist for Nauset Regional Public Schools staff will review AAC resources including equipment manufacturers, workshops and online resources for research of equipment. Tools for assistive technology assessment of individuals with severe language impairment will be discussed, feature selection, selection of skills to teach, and new developments in assistive technology will be discussed.

Language Development and Strategies: Birth through 5
Nantucket Early Childhood Network

The first hour of the workshop for preschool teachers and daycare providers will cover developmental milestones and potential red flags when observing children's development. The second hour of the workshop will focus upon practical strategies for preschool teachers and daycare providers. Included in the presentation will be a portion of a brief video discussing the importance of experience in brain development. Handouts will include an articulation screening tool that teachers can administer, a checklist of communication milestones for teachers, daycare providers and parents to use and a caregiver questionnaire that can be used when beginning discussions with parents about how well a child may or may not communicate.
